City of Holland – Civic Center

Nestled along the captivating shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa, the City of Holland beckons with its charming downtown and idyllic parks and beaches. Boasting a thriving economy, Holland embraces diversity through manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, and higher education. The city proudly hosts esteemed companies such as Herman Miller, Haworth, and Johnson Controls. Beyond its economic prowess, Holland’s annual Tulip Time Festival casts a spell, drawing thousands of visitors each year to revel in the vibrant tulip fields and celebrate the cherished Dutch heritage.

The Civic Center is a prime example of an Owner and CM coming together, overcoming obstacles along the way, and creating a facility that the entire community can enjoy.

Client Needs

In a delicate dance between the past and the future, the Civic Center stood, its façade and interior gracefully bearing the weight of time. Yet, like a well-worn storybook, it yearned for a fresh chapter, an invigorating transformation to recapture its youthful charm. The objective was clear: to honor the rich history and cherished character that had endeared the Civic Center to generations while awakening its potential to serve the needs of today’s vibrant society.

"They went far above and beyond what could reasonably be expected to bring this project to a successful completion. Because of their work and collaboration with the community, this project represents Holland's vision for the future."

Project Solution

Faced with some budget constraints, GDK worked closely with the City and the design team to figure out ways to maintain the use, functionality, and appearance of the building and still reduce the overall cost of construction to meet the budget that had been set aside to fund the project.

  • Iconic Holland building transformed through adaptive reuse project
  • Old wooden bleachers find new purpose, adorning the fireplace and new bleacher areas in the design
  • Abundance of natural light illuminates the fresh, open office spaces
  • Creative solutions for dealing with the existing “river” that runs through the basement of the facility
